PROJECT – Deconstruction of 3 Container Cranes

LOCATION – King George Dock, Hull

DATE – October 2016 onwards

PROJECT VALUE – £500,000.00

PROJECT DESCRIPTION –BDB Dismantling have been awarded the task of dismantling 3x 550ton dockside container cranes, located on King George Dock, Port of Hull, our experience in crane dismantling being one of the major deciding factors in contract award.

One of the main elements of the project was the enabling work, which involved moving the cranes from their original berth to an off-site location, where they could be safely dismantled away from existing ABP container crane loading operations, where the newly commissioned cranes were in full use.

A self-propelled modular trailer (SPMT), that was assembled on site to the required specification as per design, was used for the relocation of the cranes. The SPMT was set up with 36no axle lines totaling 175t in weight and capable of withstanding 43.5t per axle line.

Various mobile cranes ranging from 1000ton with floating ballast to 100ton, were used in the sequential dismantling of the container crane structures, with MEWP and crane with man basket used for access purposes. Close liaison was maintained with the ABP port office as 24-hour quayside clearance was needed for each mobile crane coming onto site.

Due to the unpredictability of the weather, coming off the North Sea and through the Humber Estuary, craneage operations were managed on a day to day basis. Working programmes were often revised to suit the quickly changing weather conditions, maximizing continuity of work wherever possible.
