PROJECT – Removal of 3 Coal Hoppers

LOCATION – HIT Terminal, Immingham Dock

DATE – May to June 2017

PROJECT VALUE – £100,000

PROJECT DESCRIPTION – BDB Dismantling, the deconstruction specialists from South Yorkshire, has cleared the 3 x redundant 100T coal hoppers at the Humber International Terminal, Immingham This work was awarded directly off the back of the successful removal of the container cranes at Hull.

A series of enabling activities were undertaken prior to the main deconstruction works taking place; coal residues were removed from the hopper floor; gas/oil was drained from the large storage tank directly into awaiting transport; the generator was prepared in readiness to be lifted from the hopper and reuse by ABP; external tin sheeting and associated non-structural purlings were removed.

The structures were dismantled using both hot and cold cut methods with mobile crane and PC450 demolition machine; these were used to piecemeal the hopper down in manageable pieces. Steel work was then taken to the processing compound & further processed to skip size. A MEWP was used throughout for access.

Two of the hoppers were stationed on the bridge leading out to the jetty. On occasions, we were required by ABP to stop work on the HIT Bridge to allow incoming ABP cargo vessels to be unloaded. During these times, the third hopper, located in the processing compound, was used to fall back on..

Our schedule of work was tailored around ABP requirements throughout, ensuring that vessel unloading was given priority and in such instances, continuity of our work was maintained wherever possible.
