PROJECT – Removal of 2 Dockside Cranes
LOCATION – Cardiff Docks
DATE – July to August 2017
PROJECT VALUE – £100,000
PROJECT DESCRIPTION – Crane deconstruction specialists, BDB Dismantling, have recently completed the dismantling of a further 2 cranes for Associated British Ports, this time at their Cardiff base.
The cranes dismantled at Cardiff were DD2 and Wellman container crane type, with BDB Dismantling taking the role of Principal Contractor. Asbestos surveys were carried out beforehand and an asbestos removal strategy developed alongside the risk assessments / method statement for the dismantling work.
An 800ton mobile crane was used to sequentially lower dismantled sections of crane to grade level, with oxy / propane set used to cut the crane structure as per the method statement. A 100ton mobile crane with man riding basket was used for access purposes. Steel arisings were processed by excavator/shear and hot methods once at grade level for disposal into awaiting scrap transport.
We have now successfully dismantled 16 x dockside cranes for ABP in the past 2 years of varying sizes and model types and our working partnership with Associated British Ports grows stronger and stronger.
