PROJECT – Demolition of Raw Materials Store
LOCATION – Elvington, York
DATE – May-June 2016
PROJECT VALUE – £80,000
PROJECT DESCRIPTION – BDB Dismantling were awarded the contract to demolish the Raw Materials store including 4no adjacent steel boilers, continuing our long working relationship with Yara UK Ltd.
The building was of steel construction with asbestos cement sheets clad to the sides and roof. The steel stanchions were found to be in poor condition, corroded over time by the raw material product. In areas the steel frame had been significantly strengthened and reinforced by Yara; the poor state of the building being the main reason for demolition.
Risk assessment identified one of the main concerns to be premature collapse. It was feared that substantial asbestos removal may reduce the rigidity of the overall structure, that the weight from the roof was providing. A careful methodology was designed by our team of demolition engineers where by a small area of asbestos cement roof sheets were removed prior to its demolition. The asbestos removal/demolition work progressed in the same methodical sequence until the Raw Material store had been demolished in its entirety.
As part of the contract internal tanks, pipe work, pits and control kiosks (that were to remain in-situ and reused within the new building; constructed by others on the same footprint) were protected throughout.
Yara were delighted with the project, which was completed 2 weeks within the allocated programme.
