PROJECT – Removal of Braithwaite Tank
LOCATION – Poynton, Stockport
DATE – May to June 2016
PROJECT VALUE – £20,000
PROJECT DESCRIPTION – Working in a confined environment, with a 500mm gap between the tank and building on all four elevations, BDB Dismantling were awarded the contract to demolish the steel Braithwaite tank measuring 13meters x 5meters x 5meters.
An extensive clean-up of pigeon faeces and subsequent wash down of the work area was undertaken prior to the start of work on site. The steel/asbestos clad gable end wall was removed so to provide access into the building & allow later disposal of the steel arisings.
Due to poor access, hot cut methods were used throughout, working from an independent scaffold. Working from top to bottom and from one end to the other, the tank was cut into 1meter x 1meter squares that were folded into itself, before the final cuts were completed.
Steel arisings were cleared from the base of the tank and using Forklift truck taken to the designated bulk container outside.
The dismantling of the Braithwaite tank was achieved within programme and without incident.
