PROJECT – Demolition of a Scrubber Unit
LOCATION – Cannock
DATE – January 2017
PROJECT VALUE – £40,000.00
PROJECT DESCRIPTION – Ibstock Brick are currently in the process of installing a new brick manufacturing Kiln at their Lodge Lane facility, Cannock. BDB Dismantling were awarded the contract to demolish the old scrubber unit, used previously to filter out contaminates from the brick manufacturing process.
Access constraints around the perimeter meant that a mobile crane could not be used and the proximity to the main building meant that a mechanical demolition option was not viable. We therefore chose to piecemeal the structure down working from within a MEWP, using hot methods.
The ducting, connecting the scrubber unit to the adjacent chimney was isolated to separate the two structures. The chimney was to remain existing on completion of the work therefore couldn’t be affected by our work on site. The scrubber hood was cut away and processed to size.
External coverings were removed to expose the rockwool insulation. The rockwool was removed, bagged up and disposed into the adjacent skip with full PPE being worn. The disposal of waste arisings was done so regularly and waste accumulation was avoided.
Working from side on, the scrubber unit was processed from top down. The waste arisings were processed to size once at ground level and scrap steel sorted into individual waste streams to maximize recycling opportunities. Only the rockwool insulation was sent to landfill.
