PROJECT – Deconstruction of Gas/Oil Tank

LOCATION – Lynemouth Power Station, Ashington

DATE – June 2017

PROJECT VALUE – £20,000

PROJECT DESCRIPTION – As part of Europe’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gases, increase energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources, Lynemouth Power Station is currently under radical transformation to convert the existing coal fired system into a biomass fueled power station.

BDB Dismantling were given the order to remove the 10meter high x 8meter diameter gas/oil tank, weighing in excess of 20tons. It was confirmed within the early stages that the paint applied to the outside of the tank contained lead and that this would release hazardous lead oxide, when heat was applied.

Due to the height of the bund wall, risk assessment determined that cold cut works was not a viable option and a hot work element was needed to remove the tank. Therefore, in the first instance, to mitigate the risk from lead oxide, the lead containing paint was scrabbled away from the tank wall at the point where hot work was planned.

The tank was then cut into 3 rings and lifted from the bund to a processing area by mobile crane, where it was further processed by hot work to skip size. Again, all hot work was carefully planned and carried out over plate joints, where the lead paint had been scrabbled away as part of earlier works.

Our work on site was completed well within programme and without incident.
