PROJECT – Jetty Demolition

LOCATION – Grimsby Dock

DATE – August 2017 to March 2018

PROJECT DESCRIPTION – Royal Grimsby Dock, once a hub of activity, serving the local area with trade to include coal, timber and general merchandise has sadly declined over the years and is now used solely as a base for the mass importation of vehicles.

The reinforced concrete coaling Jetty, extending 280 meters out towards the Humber Estuary, was a victim of that decline and had been in a dilapidated state for some years. The client decided that the Jetty had to be demolished.

BDB Dismantling were tasked with the deconstruction works. Working together with Humber Work Boats, a methodology was devised for the safe removal of the Jetty, that minimized debris falling into the water.

Using demolition machine, sat on a designed frame, intended to spread the weight of the load, the Jetty deck was broken into manageable sections along the horizontal and vertical plains. Each section (once released) was lifted by Mortlift vessel and placed on the awaiting Rebecca barge. This sequence was repeated down the 280 meter length of the Jetty; working in a South Westerly direction.

As part of the overall project, on completion of main Jetty deck dismantling works, a specialist diving contractor was employed to remove concrete piles at seabed level. Again, concrete was loaded onto barge by Mortlift.

The concrete arisings were taken and loaded out by Rebecca barge to a designated satellite processing site, some 800 meters down the dock. A further demolition machine with concrete cracker & breaker attachments pulverized the concrete down to size. Processed concrete was loaded out to transport and removed off site. Recovered steel was loaded into scrap transport and timber framework recycled.

We achieved a 100% recycling rate on this project and without any incident.
