PROJECT – Removal of Perimeter Windows

DATE – October 2018 to January 2019

PROJECT DESCRIPTION – Following extensive asbestos abatement and internal strip out, BDB Dismantling were awarded the contract to remove all perimeter windows from the 5 storey former office block, located within Sheffield city centre.

To facilitate the safe removal of the windows and to protect local pedestrians, an enclosed access scaffold was installed by our approved subcontractor around the perimeter of the building. As part of the scaffold design, a fully boarded waste disposal chute was constructed to the frontage to enable safe removal of waste arisings.

Before removal of the windows could take place, external stone paneling located across the top of the windows was removed. Due to the weight of the stone panels (80KG each), direct handling was not a safe option. A system to ensure safe lowering onto the floor below was developed, whereby the stone panels could be processed down to smaller size for disposal.

Working floor by floor, from top level down, windows and associated timber/steel frames were removed sectionally using reciprocating saws and handheld tools. Each window section was processed to separate glass, timber & steel and cut to smaller size to help with disposal.

Bars and hammers were used to piecemeal brick infill walls, located below the windows. All waste arisings were moved to the scaffold chute via a combination of wheelbarrows, pullys and mechanical conveyor systems for disposal into separate waste skips. A 100% recycling rate was achieved for the project.
