PROJECT – Alkyd Tank Farm Dismantling

DATE – April to May 2018

PROJECT DESCRIPTION – BDB Dismantling were asked by the client to remove 13 x vertical tanks, associated pipework, ladders & walkways from within their live alkyd tank farm. Alkyd is a flammable resin-based material that is used in the manufacture of paint & other useful day to day products. The tank farm is located meters away from operating facilities & next to the site through road.

The tank farm was decommissioned by the client prior to our arrival where tanks and pipelines were washed out and cleaned. However, as dismantling work progressed, it was evident that resin had accumulated at low points which would have been inaccessible at the time of the initial clean. BDB Dismantling & the client worked together to remove the surplus resin, achieving a fully successful clean.

Preparatory work was carried out to divorce individual tanks away from pipelines, ladders and walkways, to make them independent free-standing structures. Both cold cut and hot cut methods were employed, hot work being fully controlled under a robust permit to work system. Materials were moved to the dedicated compound for disposal into BDB transport.

A 90t mobile crane was brought onto site and used to lift the tanks clear of the tank farm. Each tank was tail lifted and loaded onto transport vehicle. It was then moved to the onsite dedicated processing compound, where insulation was removed, and the tank cut to size by demolition plant with shear attachment. Arisings were loaded out into separate BDB transport and removed off site for recycling.
