PROJECT – Demolition of a 132Kv Substation
LOCATION – Bold, St Helens
DATE – January to March 2019
PROJECT DESCRIPTION – The 132Kv substation at Bold, St Helens has been successfully demolished by the BDB Dismantling team within budget, programme & without incident, to the satisfaction of the Client Construction Manager:
“Dear Colleagues and Friends … A brief word of appreciation … I am pleased to announce we successfully managed to demolish the redundant AIS and control building at Bold. Job done, one would dare to say we just sailed through it. In doing so, we must acknowledge the hard work and attention to detail for an extensive planning and fruitful collaboration in advance of the construction phase. It is never “easy” … I want to thank everyone involved for their professional diligence: SAP’s, Engineering, HSEQ advisors, Contractors. We could not have done without it. We finish this stage in good spirit for our next stop”
BDB Dismantling took the role of Principal Contractor during the demolition phase and were responsible for the day to day management of site, whilst protecting & maintaining access to existing live electromagnetic equipment.
With site security in mind, non-ferrous buzz bar was removed in the first instance and stored in a secure room on site.
A variety of demolition plant and equipment were used to demolish the reinforced concrete gantry structures; residents being at the forefront of our minds throughout, a background reassurance air monitoring regime was set up to ensure dusts were not created.
Ceramic insulator pots were carefully removed beforehand and processed at a safe location on site.
Following removal of asbestos containing materials (including licensable materials), the brick control building was demolished down to slab level. All site won brick and concrete was processed on site and certified to 6f5, before being used to backfill all trenches; once the cable had been removed.
The 2 x reactors were manually processed down to a transport manageable size, before being lifted by mobile crane onto awaiting transport. As one of the reactors was close to a live overhead power line, close liaison and prior planning was maintained with the Client Construction Manager & Senior Authorised Person. The lift was completed smoothly without any incident.
