PROJECT – Lock Gate Dismantling

LOCATION – Immingham

DATE – August to September 2018

PROJECT DESCRIPTION – As part of a wider local government scheme to help improve flood defences following a tidal surge in 2013 that cost the local economy an estimated £113 million, BDB Dismantling were tasked with the dismantling & processing of the old lock gates at Immingham dock.

As a pair, the old lock gates weighed an estimated 340 tons. They were of carbon steel construction with timber sleepers fixed to the sealing ends & to the lock face.

Due to the thickness of the steel and internal compartmental waffle walls, a manual dismantling methodology was adopted whereby the carbon steel was cut into small manageable sections using flame cutting torch.

A demolition plant was then used to remove the section for further processing into skip size at a dedicated area.

The project was completed to programme and without incident.
