PROJECT – Asbestos Removal & Demolition of a Brick Manufacturing Plant

LOCATION – Lancashire

DATE – September 2014 – August 2015

PROJECT VALUE – £500,000

Taking the role of Principal Contractor BDB Dismantling have recently completed a third major project for Ibstock Brick inside 18 months with the part demolition of Ravenhead plant 1; the adjacent Ibstock Brick site still in operation.

The R&D asbestos survey picked up asbestos materials in various areas on site including vermiculite insulation within one of the two kilns and thermal insulation to plant & ducting. A removal strategy/programme was established with our approved licensed asbestos subcontractor so that all parties had continuity of work.

With the asbestos safely removed, the demolition work began in earnest; using hydraulic demolition plant with a variety of attachments the Grinding & Dryer Plants were demolished as were the external; toilet block; tanks; scrubber unit; and conveyor systems

The Kiln building was stripped back to shell, which included the internal demolition of; 2no brick kilns; kiln cars; steel gantries; offices; side wing; lean too. As asbestos cement was located within the fabric of one of the kilns the work had to be notified to the HSE as NNLW. A UKAS analyst was employed to carryout background reassurance air monitoring whilst the kiln was demolished by trained BDB operatives with the asbestos in-situ.

Site won material was used to backfill holes & voids and as a batter to gently grade changes in levels, following the contours of the existing landscape. The site was then handed back over to Ibstock Brick providing them with much needed storage space.
