PROJECT – Removal of Tank 902-A

LOCATION –

DATE – April 2015

PROJECT VALUE – £40,000

CLIENT –

PROJECT DESCRIPTION – BDB Dismantling to remove tank 902-A, following recommendations from the main customer as a result of previous work carried out on site (water tank demolition – see previous case study).

Tank 902-A was of mild steel construction & formally used to store condensate, a highly flammable mixture of hydrocarbons separated from gas and used in both the fuel and plastic industries. The tank had dimensions of 14 meters high x 14 meters diameter and was located within the fully operational tank farm adjacent to other highly flammable tanks and pipe ranges.

As is always the case with any demolition project and especially when working on petrochemical sites, prior planning and attention to detail is key for a successful project. Following many discussions & meetings on site various protection measures were implemented; scaffold was constructed to the perimeter to protect adjacent live tanks, pipelines, emergency wash stations and a working pad was constructed for the siting of the demolition rig and protection of below ground service supplies.

Upon receipt of the permits and confirmation that the tank was ‘gas free’ the demolition rig with rotating shear attachment dismantled the tank in its entirety, removing the tank wall & lid in small pieces for disposal into a bulk waste container. BDB Dismantling worked closely with the customer throughout who carried out the necessary NORM & lead paint checks.

The project was carried out ahead of programme, without incident & with our reputation as an industry leader enhanced.
